Google and Yahoo have always been competitors
The purpose of Google originally was so people can find what they want with ease by using the Search Engine. They now have released many other things such as Google Chrome, Gmail, Google Earth, instant messaging and many more applications, they have a wide range of purposes now such as advertising, to inform people, to educate people and also to help people by providing maps.
